Amanda Jordan, BSN, RN September 6, 2024Have you given up hope on working in the healthcare industry because you cannot devote yourself to years of training? If so, we have good news for you! Not only will a CNA position in New York allow you to be part of a medical team, but you can also train for this career within only six to eight weeks.
In the state of New York, Prometric is responsible for handling the testing and certification of nursing assistants who wish to work in the state. For you to obtain CNA certification, you must first complete a state-approved program. This should include a combination of both lecture-based and clinical training. Upon completion of this requirement, you must then pass both segments of the CNA competency exam offered through Prometric's testing service.
One of the reasons a career as a nursing assistant has become increasingly popular in New York today is that it is extremely easy to become certified. The only thing required of you, other than completing a training program, is to achieve an acceptable score on your competency exam. If you are able to do this, you will automatically be granted certification and placement on the New York Nurse Aide Registry.
If you need to verify your nursing assistant certification in New York, navigate to the Prometric/New York Nurse Aide Exam website. Then, click on “CNA registry services.” Then, on "New York Nurse Aide Registry." The next page is a tool you can use to verify your certification.
You must renew your New York CNA certification every 24 months. To do this, you must have worked at least seven hours as a paid nurse aide. To renew, go to the Prometric’s New York Nurse Aide webpage and click “CNA registry services.” Then, "Certification Renewal Application." This will lead you to the proper renewal form for your state.
If you did not work at least seven hours or more during the two years prior to your CNA certification’s expiration date, you will need to reinstate your certification. In most cases, you can do this by scheduling an appointment to retake the Prometric CNA competency exam.
To transfer your CNA certification from New York to a different state, you will need to locate your new state's CNA regulatory agency first so that you can know what your new state’s requirements for allowing CNAs to work within its jurisdictions are. You can easily do this by using the search tool found on the National Council of State Boards of Nursing website. While many states simply require you to verify your current CNA status, you may also need to complete various continuing education classes, verify your CNA licensure and/or pay a transfer fee.
